World Spine Day, 16 October: Love Your Spine, Protect Your Future
Your spine supports you every day. How well are you looking after it?
World Spine Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about spinal health and the importance of keeping our backs healthy, strong and mobile. Whether you spend your day sitting at a desk, working on your feet, driving, exercising or caring for your family, your spine plays an essential role in almost everything you do.
The good news? Small, consistent changes to your daily routine can make a meaningful difference to your spinal health.
Why is spinal health so important?
Your spine provides structural support, allows you to move and bend, and protects the spinal cord, which carries messages between your brain and the rest of your body.
Back and neck pain are common and can affect people of all ages. Prolonged inactivity, repetitive movements, sudden increases in physical activity, stress and poor sleep may all contribute to musculoskeletal discomfort.
Looking after your spine is not simply about avoiding pain. It is about maintaining mobility, strength and independence so that you can continue doing the things you enjoy.
Here are a few tips that can help:
1. Keep moving
Movement is one of the best ways to support a healthy back. Walking, swimming, cycling and other activities you enjoy can help maintain mobility and overall fitness. Aim to move regularly throughout the day rather than remaining in one position for too long.
2. Build strength and flexibility
Your back, abdominal and hip muscles all contribute to movement and spinal support. A suitable programme of strengthening, mobility and flexibility exercises can help you move more confidently and comfortably. We have a tailor made programme that can assist you in this.
3. Make your workspace work for you
If you spend long hours at a desk, adjust your chair, screen and keyboard to suit your body. Keep your screen at a comfortable viewing height, support your feet and change positions regularly. Remember, good ergonomics is important for avoiding work related back issues.
4. Lift with care
When lifting, keep the load close to your body, use a comfortable and stable stance, and avoid twisting under heavy loads. Whenever possible, plan the lift beforehand and ask for help with objects that are too heavy or awkward.
Physiotherapy can play an important role in preventing and managing many musculoskeletal problems affecting the spine.
We can assess your movement, strength and mobility, help identify contributing factors, and develop an individualised treatment plan. This may include exercise, education, movement advice and other appropriate treatment techniques to help you return to your everyday activities.
This World Spine Day, challenge yourself to take a few simple steps towards a healthier spine. Get up and move more often, make time for physical activity, build strength gradually and pay attention to what your body needs.
